Dreamweaver - Introductory Course (2 days)

Course Objectives

This published outline is used on our public course, but a customised course can be completely flexible to accommodate your existing experience and requirements. More time could be spent on some topics, or further features can be incorporated.

As much work as possible is carried out hands-on with Dreamweaver, with real pages being built and a working web site being created. Where server-setup or other limitations apply, some elements may need to be covered in theory.

Getting Started: basics, defining a Local Site, the Development Process

Adding Content to a Site: Formatting Document Structure, Text Formatting, Setting Document Properties, Cleaning Microsoft Word HTML

Linking Documents:Understanding Links, Linking to Files in Your Site, Anchors, E-mail Links

Working with Graphics: Graphics - intro to the issues, Placing Graphics, Modifying Image Properties, Using Fireworks for Images, Image Maps, Adding Flash Objects

Designing Pages using Tables: Structure, Importing Tabular Data, Designing in Layout View, Using Tracing Images

Using Templates and Libraries: Site Templates, Site Library Items

Creating Forms: Understanding HTML Forms, Form Processing, Setting Navigation of the Form

Understanding Frames and Framesets: Creating Frames, Altering and Linking Frames

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS): Creating a New Style Sheet, Using Custom Classes, Using CSS Selector Styles, Attaching External Style Sheets, Editing Style Sheets, Embedded Styles

Adding Interactive Page Elements: Using Behaviors, Button Rollovers, Disjointed Rollovers, Creating a Jump Menu, Adding Layers for Interactivity

Testing, Deployment and Maintenance - File Maintenance, Connecting to a Remote Site, Using Find and Replace

Pre-requisites

This introduction is ideal for people who need to get started with web design. No special knowledge is assumed, but it helps to be familiar with what is happening on the internet, either by attending an internet introduction course, or from regular use of the internet.

 

Dreamweaver for Existing Users/Advanced

Course Code DMW002 (2 days)

Pre-requisites

Delegates should already be using Dreamweaver, and be familiar with the majority of topics in the Introductory outline.

Course Content

Clean Up HTML: Removing extraneous code from web pages created in other packages (e.g. FrontPage or Word)

Design and Layout Issues: Using tables and images for layout. Using tracing image. Target screen size and speed. Adding and removing spacer images. Using layout mode. Managing Table and Image wrapping and position

Advanced Forms: Using Images as buttons. Text wrapping in text fields. Setting up a response page. Form field validation. Setting List/Menu properties, such as multiple select

Developing HTML Styles: Creating your own paragraph and character styles.

Libraries: Placing pieces of design or code in a reusable library. Accessing library items when designing a new page.

Customizing Dreamweaver: Setting up your preferred working area, Changing Dreamweaver defaults to suit the way you work, Setting limitation on browser or HTML versions, Specifying an external HTML editor, Creating new commands from the history panel, Changing menus and shortcuts, Changing dialog boxes, Using the Extension Manager. Using Colour schemes

Asset Favourites: Managing regularly used assets such as images, sounds, clips and other web enhancements

Layers: Changing the stacking order of layers, Nesting layers, Using style sheets to create layers

Cascading Style Sheets: Understanding what CSS can do; Compatibility issues, Creating an embedded style sheet, Apply custom styles, Making an external style sheets and linking it to web pages, Editing styles, Converting internal styles to an external style sheet

Timelines: The timeline panel, Adding layers to the timeline, Adding key frames, Animating a layer in the timeline, Changing visibility of a layer in the timeline, Record the path of a layer for animation, Modifying the timeline, Changing the visibility or stacking order of an image in the timeline

Search and Replace: Searching text and searching code, Making the most of advanced searches in code

Behaviours: Adding a behaviour to an object, Checking the target browser, Opening a new browser window, Adding several actions to one event, Building disjointed rollover effects with Layers and Behaviours

Plug-ins: Linking and embedding sounds, Adding Flash, Shockwave and QuickTime files

Loose Ends: Adding Flash text and buttons, Importing data from spreadsheets, Sorting data in a table. Inserting an automatic date, Using Server Side Includes to combine several web pages as one without using Frames, Using the HTML editor for things you can't do directly in Dreamweaver, such as special table borders. Using the grid and rulers
