Objectives
This course takes delegates further with HTML. Building on the foundation
course, it introduces frames, style sheets, multimedia, interaction and
other complex design elements. Also included is a brief look at the principles
of effective web design and issues about maintaining your web.
Prerequisites
Delegates need to be familiar with Windows 95, 98 or NT4 Workstation
as a user. Familarity with the content of our introductory course, Just
Enough HTML to Stay on Top of Things, is essential.
Course Outline
Working with Tables
Using tables to improve the layout of a page. Using the different table
description options. Keeping complex tables under control. Problems and
work-arounds with tables.
Creating and Using Frames
Understanding how frames work. Creating frames which improve the usability
of your web. Hyperlinks and frames. Targeting frames and new browser windows.
Principles of Good Web Design
Design for easy browsing. Making your web attractive and effective so
that it will be used.
Using 'Cascading Style Sheets' for ease and consistency. Brief overview
of the tools required to create web graphics.
Multimedia Content in Web Pages
Making the most of multimedia (sounds, animations etc). Using image maps
for multiple hyperlinks. A brief overview of popular CGI scripting to
provide more functionality to web pages. Offering files for download from
your pages. Designing for efficiency and avoiding slow pages.
Encouraging Interaction
Creating user forms to glean data online. Adding input fields, selection
options to the form. Creating a form results page. Handling the results
entered onto forms. Offering Email responses on pages.
Meta Tags and Comments
Including information about the page. Keywords, refresh and expiry tags.
Commenting your pages. How JavaScript is used in web pages.
